Devotional: Pursuing God by Faith

Introduction
Welcome to this devotional based on Romans 9:19-33. Today, we’ll uncover the vital truth of pursuing a relationship with God through faith instead of relying on our own works. This shift can profoundly transform our lives.

Scripture Reading
Let’s reflect on Romans 9:30-32:
"What shall we say then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith. But that Israel, who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness, did not succeed in reaching that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works."

Key Insights

1. Pursuit of Righteousness
The Gentiles achieved righteousness through faith, while the Israelites stumbled because they relied on their works. This illustrates that our relationship with God is defined not by our actions, but by our trust in Jesus’ completed work.

2. The Stumbling Stone
Jesus is described as a “stumbling stone” and a “rock of offense.” Many stumble over Him because they seek validation through their efforts rather than accepting the grace He offers.

3. The Nature of Faith
Faith is an active commitment. It calls us to trust and depend on God, recognizing that our works cannot earn our salvation. This understanding liberates us and provides a solid foundation for our lives.

Reflection Questions

- Are you pursuing God through faith or works?
Consider your relationship with God. Are you striving to earn His love through your actions, or are you resting in the assurance of His grace?

- How do you respond to rebuke?
When faced with correction, do you accept it as an opportunity for growth, or do you resist? Remember that God’s discipline is a sign of His love.

- What is your heart focused on?
Assess whether your pursuits lead you toward a self-righteous mindset or a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with Christ.

Practical Applications

1. Embrace Grace
Approach God with humility, acknowledging that your worth is not defined by your works. Trust solely in His grace for your salvation.

2. Seek Community
Engage with relationships that foster mutual growth in faith. Surround yourself with individuals who encourage and challenge you to pursue God wholeheartedly.

3. Daily Actions
Reflect on your daily choices through the lens of glorifying God. Whether in eating, drinking, or decision-making, continually ask, “How can I glorify God in this?”

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of grace that liberates us from the burden of works. Help us to build our relationship with You on faith. May we embrace Your corrections and strive to glorify You in all aspects of our lives. Guide us to trust in Jesus, our firm foundation, and transform our hearts to reflect Your righteousness. Amen.

 Closing Thoughts

You are not defined by your accomplishments or failures; you are defined by Christ’s love and sacrifice. Pursue Him by faith, allowing His righteousness to fill your life. Consider how you can apply this truth in your daily activities. What steps will you take today to deepen your faith?
